Go! Go! Pogogirl Is Coming to Mega Drive!
So, as you might have already heard on Twitter, it is finally happening: Go! Go! PogoGirl is coming to the Sega Mega Drive! Yes, after getting asked over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again, it is indeed finally happening. And I mean, it makes sense. Go! Go! PogoGirl was always intended as a loveletter to Mega Drive platformers (as are most of my games, actually) so not having it end up on the actual console itself would have been a bit weird, I guess. Especially in this day and age, where Mega Drive development has become considerably easier than in the 90s — although still not exactly easy, of course.
Now, I’m sure you have a lot of questions, none of which I’ll be able to answer. But let’s do it anyway.
Will there be a physical release?
I assure you, I have absolutely no idea. Obviously I’d love there to be one, but that’s all I can say for now. The moment I figure out something I’ll let you know, believe me.
Are you porting the game yourself?
No. I have neither the skill nor the time to undertake such a project, so the porting is handled by Space Pants Games. He’s actually been developing for the Mega Drive since the 90s, so that dude knows what he’s doing.
Is the game developed with SGDK?
Nope. Space Pants Games has his own assembly-based setup for Mega Drive development, which he’ll be using for Go! Go! PogoGirl. And I think there’s some black magic involved there too, but that might just be me.
Will the game be the same as the original release?
As much as possible, yes.
When will the game release?
When it’s done.
When will the game be done?
No idea.
If I’ve missed any obvious questions, let me know in the comments and I’ll be sure to not be able to answer them.
Kidding aside, this project came as a surprise even to myself, and it is still in earliest of early stages. So when I say I don’t know something, that’s because I really have no dang clue, not because I’m trying to be mysterious or game-markety. To keep up with news on the game, you can join my Discord, where Space Pants Games also hangs out. Of course I’ll also be posting stuff on Twitter, on Mastodon and on Bluesky.
If any of those services could finally win that social media race, I’d be very grateful by the way.
And finally, I also have a newsletter, if you want to keep things nice and retro, and even an RSS feed.
Space Pants Games will also be posting the occasional WIP on his Twitter.
I guess that’s it for now. I’m excited as balls that this is finally happening, and I’ll be sure to keep you updated. See ya next time!
Want To Buy Me a Coffee?
Coffee rules, and it keeps me going! I'll take beer too, though.
